As you head south on US 1through Key Largo, you will quickly enter Tavernier and Plantation Key. Only a couple miles long but home to the historic district of the keys that have preserved the conch style home and Bahama shutter accents. Tavernier creek connects the bay to the ocean and hosts many popular neighborhoods. One of which is known as Tavernero; a small private grass airstrip hidden in the neighborhood running next to the creek. With only 57 lots, this secluded subdivision is truly one of a kind as homeowners can land and park their planes in their front yard and drop their boats at the private basin. Leaving Tavernier, you quickly enter Islamorada, well known as the Sports fishing capital of the world and for its luxurious waterfront homes, quaint shops, and high-end family-owned restaurants. Islamorada has a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and high-end coastal living with some of the most personable and detail-oriented resorts. Leaving this unique fishing town starts the scenic drive towards Key West, one lane going North and one lane going south, so don’t rush and take in all the beautiful scenery each bridge has to offer. The Florida Keys is made up of 42 bridges and 113 miles of island.
You will soon enter Marathon, known as the purple heart city. This is the middle of the keys, Mile marker 50, halfway to Key Largo and halfway to Key West. The airport here is public, so it is very common for homeowners to fly in on their private jets or charters and then drive to the nearest key they will be staying. Marathon is widely known for its short-term rentals and great fishing. It is home to the famous 7-Mile bridge, and Sombrero Beach.
There are many small keys between Marathon and Key West that each offer something special, such as the Key Deer in Big Pine key, No name pub hidden bar, and Sky Diving in Summerland. These are just a few of the hidden gems you will pass on the way south. 25 miles from Key West you will find Summerland Key, best known for its excellent snorkeling, annual snapper spawn, and hidden private airstrip. Very similar to Tavernaero, this airstrip sits in the center of the street with homes on both sides, and a marina at the end the street offering 15 slips each 40 foot long, along with a sixty-foot-wide canal leading to the ocean. The adventure down the keys is coming to an end. Key West is the southernmost key in the Florida Keys widely known for its history, historical landmarks, shipwrecks, art, and of course the bustling Duval Street and many famous bars. Key West, unlike the other keys, has a very vibrant night life where many go to enjoy bar hopping, people watching, street performers, and live music. Key West is huge destination with its international airport and cruise ship port to serve as a travel hub for those passing through or arriving at their Florida Keys vacation destination.
