Ways to Give Back This Thanksgiving in the Florida Keys

Lifestyle Kelsey Caputo-Frins November 3, 2025

A Season of Gratitude—Florida Keys Style

In the Keys, Thanksgiving doesn’t come with snow—it comes with sunsets, turquoise water, and an island community that quietly takes care of its own. While many enjoy festive dinners and gatherings, plenty of local families, service workers, and seniors face food insecurity during the holidays.

This season, join in the true spirit of the islands by giving back. Below are verified, local ways to donate, volunteer, and help Monroe County neighbors in need—organized from Key Largo all the way down to Key West.

Upper Keys: Key Largo, Tavernier & Islamorada

1.  1.   SOS Foundation – Key Largo Pantry (sosfoundation.org)

SOS operates one of the largest food pantries in the Upper Keys, distributing nutritious food weekly to families in need.

How to help:

  • Drop off canned goods, pasta, rice, or dry staples.
  • Volunteer during distribution days in Key Largo.
  • Donate online—every dollar funds local Monroe County access.

2.      2. Burton Memorial United Methodist Church – Tavernier (burtonumc.org)

Burton Memorial partners with United Way of Collier & the Keys’ “Feed the Keys” initiative as an official drop-off site for non-perishable food donations.

How to help:

  • Bring non-perishables to collection bins (Mondays & Wednesdays 9 a.m.–12 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 5–7 p.m.).
  • Check directly with the church for updates on Thanksgiving meal distribution or turkey donations.
  • Suggested items: boxed potatoes, canned vegetables, stuffing mix, or shelf-stable milk.

3.      3. Islamorada Community Church Pantry

This local outreach supports residents from Plantation Key to Lower Matecumbe through year-round food and supply donations.

How to help:

  • Drop off Thanksgiving staples or hygiene kits.
  • Sponsor a meal basket for a family in need.

Middle Keys: Marathon

1.     1.  KAIR – Keys Area Interdenominational Resources (marathonkair.org)

KAIR assists Marathon families with food, rent, utilities, and emergency needs, and provides annual holiday baskets.

How to help:

  • Deliver non-perishables to 3010 Overseas Hwy, Marathon.
  • Donate funds for grocery gift cards or meal kits.
  • Volunteer for Thanksgiving food basket assembly and delivery

Lower Keys & Key West

1.     1.  Florida Keys Children’s Shelter (fkcs.org)

The Children’s Shelter serves Monroe County youth and families, ensuring local kids have safe homes and holiday support.

How to help:

  • Sponsor a child’s Thanksgiving or Christmas wish list.
  • Donate new, unwrapped gifts or gift cards.
  • Financial contributions stay 100% local.

2.      2. SOS Foundation – Stock Island Pantry (sosfoundation.org)

Serving Key West and the Lower Keys, this pantry provides nutritious food boxes year-round and accepts holiday donations.

How to help:

  • Drop off food donations at 5640 Maloney Ave, Stock Island.
  • Volunteer to help organize, sort, or deliver.

3.      3. Faith-Based Food Drives in Key West - Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry (FKOC) (fkoc.org/food-pantry)

Run by the Florida Keys Outreach Coalition, this long-standing Key West pantry partners with several local churches to feed residents in need.

How to help:

  • Drop off non-perishables at 2221 Patterson Ave, Key West.
  • Coordinate with partner churches like St. Mary Star of the Sea, Glad Tidings Tabernacle, and First United Methodist Church, which regularly collect for the pantry during November.
  • Monetary donations and volunteer shifts are also welcomed.

These combined church efforts help supply both the FKOC and SOS pantries during Thanksgiving week—keeping holiday tables full from Stock Island to Old Town.

Additional Ways to Give

  • Feed the Keys Initiative – uwcollierkeys.org/feedthekeys: Countywide drive supporting multiple Keys food pantries.
  • United Way of Collier & the Keys – uwcollierkeys.org: Provides ongoing funding to local nonprofits.
  • Retail Drives – Publix and Winn-Dixie stores throughout the Keys offer quick donation options at checkout this month.

Local Giving Matters

The Florida Keys face some of the highest grocery and housing costs in Florida. Seasonal income swings make the holidays especially tough for many working families and seniors. Local giving ensures your donations help real residents—our teachers, first responders, and hospitality workers—right here in Monroe County.

The true magic of the Keys lies in how neighbors quietly show up for one another. This Thanksgiving, drop by your nearest Berkshire Hathaway office, Burton Memorial Church, or any local pantry—and help make sure every island table has something to be thankful for.
